Our sound is, perhaps, the most difficult aspect of the band to describe. To say that we have no lyrics, rockin' drums, driving bass, and guitar with lots of reverb evokes images of classic surf bands, both old and contemporary. While we don't quite fit in that category, it may be the best generalization one could make about how we kick out the jams. Our songs are usually more structured than The Mermen, more aggressive than The Ventures, and less sci-fi than Man or Astroman. We also wear fewer wrestling masks than Los Straitjackets. Some might say "The Awkwards combine old-school surf and 80's glam with a punk ethic to produce a sound that's hard to classify, easy to identify, and impossible to forget." Since that's totally lame, we prefer to describe the Awkward Sound as "surf-influenced instrumental rock."
Collected here are a few examples of what you can expect to hear when we get onstage. If you're the adventurous type, you can check out demo recordings to hear some more recent material. Be warned though, these aren't studio demos, these are raw practice space recordings - tape hiss and mistakes included as a bonus.
